15 March
The opening ceremony was held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) witnessed by around 80000 spectators. Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, declared the Games open.
The ceremony began with a flying tram coming down from the top of the MCG and landing in the centre of a white stage and hundreds of singing and dancing performers came down. The ceremony included flag raising and singing of the Australian nation anthem, a rendition of 'Happy Birthday' by opera singer Dame Kiri Te Kanawa for the Queen.
The Queen's Baton coming along the Yarra River in the MCG, was further carried by former Olympians Cathy Freeman, Ron Clarke, Marjorie Jackson-Nelson, and John Landy who presented it to the Queen.
The ceremony was concluded with the performance by singer Delta Goodrem of a song entitled 'Together We Are One'. |
