Information given by the Hon'ble Minister in Lok Sabha regarding Commonwealth Games 2010 >> The following information was given by the Hon'ble Minister in a written reply in the Lok Sabha on 26.04.2005. As per Bid Document the Commonwealth Games are to be held in following disciplines: Aquatics, Athletics, Badminton, Boxing, Cycling, Gymnastics, Hockey, Lawn Bowls, Net Ball, Shooting, Squash, Rugby 7”s Table Tennis, Weightlifting and Wrestling. The drawing of special strategy for training of sportspersons for major international events including Commonwealth Games is an on-going process under Long Term Development Plans (LTDPs) which are finalised in consultation with National Sports Federations (NSFs). However, it is the responsibility of NSFs to provide the required inputs for the preparation of LTDPs on the basis of their assessment of previous performances and achievable targets. For this purpose, the disciplines in which India is likely to achieve good results have been identified and more concentrated inputs are given to these disciplines. Systematic approach is adopted to select and train athletes and teams for participation in the Commonwealth Games by drawing LTDP to put in action four year roll-on Plan under which elite sportspersons selected on the basis of their performance are put through scientifically designed continuous training programme. The players for participation in Commonwealth Games, 2010 will be identified after reviewing the performance of concerned team/players in Asian Games, 2006, Commonwealth Games, 2006 and Olympic Games, 2008 and other important international events just before the Commonwealth Games, 2010. As regards creation of infrastructure, at the time of Government approval for Commonwealth Games Bid in the year 2003, Indian Olympic Association (IOA) had projected an expenditure of Rs.399.05 crore. Besides, Government of NCT of Delhi has projected cost of construction of Games Village at Rs.186.00 crore and construction of indoor and outdoor stadium in the Yamuna Sports Complex and upgradation of existing infrastructure of the Delhi Development Authority at Rs.32.50 crore. However, these estimates are further likely to be revised upwards. Again, the existing Sports Infrastructure of Sports Authority of India, DDA, NDMC being used as the main venues would require major renovation and upgradation. IOA while submitting the proposal to Government had, on the basis of a consultant’s assessment, projected revenue generation of 100 million US dollars. The Government of India has undertaken to meet the shortfall between the revenue and expenditure. |
